Episode 12 : Families

OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE! What could my mother possibly want NOW?!?
Poor old Jay is on the phone to his mum…again today and she’s driving him slowly mad with her over enthusiastic need to know what he’s doing all the time. Meanwhile Ollie wishes his parents had actually bothered to contact him at all over the last few weeks!
Cut to group discussions on parents where Felix actually makes a valid point. How come your own parents annoy you when everyone else’s seem so cool?
Before they can say ‘adults are a pain’ they’re assigned a task to look at each others families and create role plays out of past experiences! And everyone’s sooo excited to get stuck in….NOT!
As they split off into groups of three they’re forced to share the dynamics of their home lives. While Ollie’s parents clearly argue all the time, Jays’ mum just can’t seem to leave her budding star alone (she’s texting him now for goodness sake), Khush’s crew would rather agree with each other than have to argue things out and Felix shows a vulnerability when he shares his one parent home life with Ollie.
Hmm, playing each others parents opens up channels that seem to pull at the heart strings a little more than they should…
When Toone finds Ollie on his own, thinking about a role play that made him realise he hates his parents arguments. Memories of boarding school come flooding back and he admits how he felt neglected, alone, sad. He’s angry that they expect him to be a lawyer like his brother or a scientist like his sister and the fact that they don’t seem interested in Avalon Heights brings to light the fact that Ollie…sweet, calm, unassuming Ollie is ANGRY that they don’t support his dream! Well, there’s no use in crying over spilt milk, it’s time to channel those emotions into positive energy! Toone’s tip of the day: Take the anger and feed the feelings into each and every one of your forthcoming performances!
With that advice, Toone decides to take the matter into his own hands and invites Ollie’s oldies to come and watch this afternoon’s show – it’s time they saw a few home truths….literally!
It’s show time and it looks like Ollie and team have put his parents on trial…..
The Jury(through song and dance) reaches a verdict: Ollie’s parents have been proven guilty as charged and are sentenced to finding less time to be busy and more time for Ollie. A round of applause for the play, the acting is over, but how did the scene wash with his real family. Harsh faces, narrowed eyes and Ollie is scared to approach his mum and dad but when they tell him it’s time he talked and they listened, he knows showing them how he really feels was the right thing to do
With such a happy ending Jay jumps on the ‘truthful’ bandwagon and tells his mum to stop calling him so much too!
Hurrah, success all round, the play was a hit, the pretend became a reality and the moral of the story ‘you may not be able to choose your family, but you can make them fit more comfortably if you bare them your soles! (souls) boom boom – get it?
